Work involves planning, organizing, and coordinating with local officials, community leaders and organizations in developing programs to meet the reading and informational needs of the service area. Work also includes the performance of managerial duties relating to office routine, personnel actions, and budgetary items in Alamance County. Work is evaluated through the overall effectiveness of library operations. Examples of work include:
- Directs the supervision of all library employees including the maintenance of all necessary files and records.
- Serves as the staff and secretary of all library boards and committees; works with them in recommending all programs and services of the library.
- Prepares annual budget for the library.
- Prepares and interprets all statistical, financial, and other information that is necessary for the library board, local officials, and state and federal reports.
- Administers the expenditure of all funds under the direction of the county manager and supervises the accounting for these expenditures.
- Supervises all book and materials selection based on the needs of the community and of the library in keeping with budgetary limitations.
- Advises as to the maintenance of all library facilities and property; assists in planning of new buildings and in the alterations to existing buildings.
- Supervises the overall publicity and programming activities of the library system, including participating in community activities and maintaining contacts with Friends of the Library groups, local officials and organizations.
- Performs related work as required.

The normal work schedule for the position holder is 9 AM - 6 PM with a rotation schedule for evenings and weekends in a public services area. This schedule also has to be flexible to accommodate class schedules, travel to and from distance education sites, tours, and/or talks for regional groups and associations, and other pertinent events.
